Artist’s Description of the original artwork
Title: Big Shanghai
Acrylic on canvas / Size 540mm×780mm / Year 2006
I was doing a pastiche of Shanghai 1930s themes. I am glad I had this painting photographed as it was destroyed at some point, and I don ‘t know why that happened or who did it. I came into my studio one day and there it was against the wall with a great big hole in it. I really liked this painting, a lot is going on, it’s colourful and full of energy but obviously someone took a dislike to it. Such a shame, but those things happened sometime in Shanghai.
Da (big) Shanghai would be something the nationalist would call Shanghai. Big brother Shanghai. Da is also used for gangsters.
