Artist’s Description of the original artwork
Title: Flag of Shanghai
Oil on canvas / Size 150cm×120cm / Year 2005-2006
With this painting I was just trying to play with the idea of the old Shanghai being known as, 大 Shanghai (‘da’ as in ‘big’) – Big Shanghai, back in the day. I made a pretend flag of Shanghai. This painting is in possession of a collector from Taiwan, he has had it on display in his wine bar in the Fuxing road area of Shanghai for about 15 years. He has made a popular video about how he got his painting.
