This is the fourth painting in the Ghost of the Past series. A more abstract one in the series.
If you accidentally stand on a ghost, you will be haunted, this is popular belief in China. Ghosts are a huge part of Chinese culture, but believing in them are considered superstition and according to the party deemed illegal.
The Ghost series is also about old Chinese traditions that were eliminated by the party but are still very much part of Chinese culture. People talking about what was happening in the cultural revolution, which they are not theoretically allowed to talk about.
