Artist’s Description of the original artwork

Title: Urban Mini Painting 2

Acrylic on canvas / Size 297×210mm / Year 2005

When I lived in Xujiahui road I had to walk through an old neighbourhood to get to the subway station. This street was actually famous during ‘the great leap forward’ for making these things for scaring birds. When Mao said ‘kill all the birds they are eating the grain’. It was a very ramshackle neighbourhood when Shanghai was modernising all around it and was bound to be knocked down sooner rather than later. I decided to paint it in this modern fashion as a memory of that daily route to the subway station, a very interesting area that I knew wasn’t going to last long.
