Artist’s Description of the original artwork

Title: Figure

Oil on canvas / Size 100cm×80cm / Year 2005

Practice painting leading up to the Three Figure series. I was working on a Neoexpressionist style and this painting was basing a lot on living near this plastic surgery clinic and how people were redesigning their bodies. Every day I was seeing these people coming out covered in bandages. I was fascinated by how people were reshaping themselves physically and as well China as a country. It was more like an academic prep scene, stylish piece. I was collecting anime books at the time because I was fascinated by comic art and Chinese people was just beginning to learn about comic art.  They were learning it from Korea and Japan on the whole so in the book shops there used to be a lot of these ‘how to draw books’  and I found it quite inspiring. The proportions and shapes of the figures that were used to teach people to draw were great, after decades of Russian classicism. This was one of the earliest paintings I did in my studio at 696 Weihai Road.  I do not know the whereabouts of this painting today.
