Description of the original artwork
Title: McCommunism by Naomi Klein
Mixed media on canvas / Size 250cm x 200cm / Year 2008
Artist’s statement
This oil painting is of Shanghai, looking at the Pudong side which was a city of skyscrapers built while I was living in Shanghai. When I first saw the area in 1993 it was a marshy bog. The river in this area is now one of the busiest waterways in the world. The out of control flashy mix of capitalism under a communist government, titled McCommunism by Naomi Klein. I chose this new word for the painting title, as I tried to show people celebrating the emptiness of capital consumerism with no spiritual base.
